Guidance: Impairment from head injury was rated using Section 13.2 Criteria for Rating Impairment Due to Central Nervous System Disorders (308), and Section 13.3 Criteria for Rating Cerebral Impairments (309). The Guides indicates that one should first determine whether a disturbance is present in the level of consciousness or awareness; this is not applicable in this case. The evaluator then assesses (2) mental status and highest integrative functioning, (3) understanding and use of language, and (4) any emotional or behavioral disturbance. The most severe cerebral impairment is identified and combined with other neurological impairments identified in Table 13-1 Neurological Impairments That Are Combined With the Most Severe Impairment (308).
